Oracle Managed Files (OMF)

Oracle9i has introduced some new features that up the ante for better management and performance of storage structures and have the potential to really make a difference in the database. On the better manageability front, you can make use of Oracle Managed Files (OMF) when creating your database.

For simple databases (or databases using a large RAID design), using OMF eases tablespace and redo log placement because the location of these storage structures is held in Oracle’s configuration file (SPFILE). From a storage conservation standpoint, OMF is nice because it will automatically remove any datafiles from the server when a tablespace is dropped. Note that OMF does have its drawbacks, especially for databases that require striping over many physical disks.
