Web Stalkers
Chapter 2 -
Web Weirdos
Introduction
While many people on the Internet would be
considered “normal,” the absence of face-to-face contact makes the
web a haven for all manner of “fruits and nuts.”
The anonymity of the web makes it an ideal
haven for all sorts of people with diagnosable mental health issues,
from the mildly neurotic to the certifiably insane. The challenge is
being able to recognize the signs of those with a dangerous mental
condition. This chapter will briefly introduce the specific types
of web weirdoes, how to spot them and what dangers they present to
the general public.
The Land of Fruits and Nuts
Volumes have been written about the root causes
and treatments of mental conditions, and dozens of famous
psychologists from Sigmund Freud to Carl Rogers express opinions on
the nature of neurosis and mental defects.
Whether subscribing to the Freudian notion that
repressed desires are the root of neurotic behaviors or believing
the Rogerian theses that the causal origins of deviant behavior are
of little consequence; everyone agrees that it is in one’s best
interest to learn how to reliably spot those with personality
disorders, which might be threatening. Without degenerating into
psychobabble, there is a need for some type of roadmap to the world
wide web of weirdos so that people can navigate the electronic world
in relative safety.
