Conclusion
This chapter has been an introduction of the
nature of Internet communication and the many different
personalities one interacts with on the web.
Many issues concerning text-only communication
have been presented. They can be summarized as follows:
-
The Problem with Text-Only Communication –
Without the ability to hear a person speak and assess their body
language, evaluating intent becomes a matter of grammar, syntax
and word usage. Emoticons are now a popular way to emphasize
meaning.
-
Assessing Intelligence – Through the use of
spelling, grammar, style and sentence structure, Internet users
can evaluate another user’s general intelligence level.
-
Assessing Personality - To assist in the
classification of the mindset of an individual, information on
the various personality disorders most commonly found on the
Internet, thus allowing a user to quickly identify and deal with
particular personalities.
-
Personality Conflicts – Learning which
types of personalities align and conflict will ultimately give
the Internet user an edge when interacting with others.
The next chapter is more serious. It delves
into the darker side of the Internet in order to help users
understand those Internet users with serious mental health issues as
well as those dangerous individuals with malicious intent.
