Chapter 2 -
Understanding Web Personalities
Assessing
Personality on the Web
The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory
(MMPI) has been a recognized tool for evaluating personalities for
decades and the 500 true/false questions employed in the tool
provide incredible insights into personality. Unfortunately this
tool is not readily available online, so users must learn to make
broad generalizations about character on the Internet.
To properly understand the motives and mind-set
of any individual, it is useful to classify the end user into
personality types. By quickly identifying the type of person, one
can anticipate their motives and desires, and devise a strategy to
deal with them effectively.
This approach may sound Machiavellian, but it
works very well especially for those who already have some
experience with electronic media. In addition, most people tend to
have very specific personality characteristics, and can generally be
categorized into one of the following types:
-
The Wannabe
-
The Rottweiler
-
The Baby
-
The Luddite
-
The Scientist
-
The Charger
