Web Stalkers
Chapter 2 -
Understanding Web Personalities

The World’s First Emoticon

While primitive, these icons helped immensely to remove the ambiguity of text-only communications. Even when using a medium that does not support emoticons, one can still portray a statement that they think is funny with a <funny> or <grin> comment.  This will at least let the reader know that the sender thought it was funny.

As the web evolved in the mid 1990’s people started to use emoticons.  The word emoticon is an internet-created word that comes from joining the words emotion and icon.  These emoticons are icons that can be inserted into some e-mail programs, instant messaging programs, and web sites to help clarify the non-verbal intent of messages.
