Chapter 12 - Virus Attacks
Viruses and Personal Safety
If enough of the right kind of information is
compromised through a virus attack, it is possible for a computer to
come under the control of a third party. If this happens, the
computer can be used to conduct illegal activity, and chances are
the owner of the computer would be unaware that it is occurring.
If an investigation of the illegal activity
ensues, chances are detectives will follow the digital trail to the
unwitting owner of the captive machine. This can be a bit
embarrassing, to say the least. Nobody wants the Computer Crimes
Investigations Dept. van parked in front of their house. It isn’t
likely that charges will be brought against an innocent person, but
there are other repercussions. An investigation could be lengthy,
and require a significant amount of time and effort on everybody’s
part. It may also be necessary to confiscate the computer as
evidence, at least until the case has been closed.
It should be clear at this point, that it is
important for everyone to protect themselves against virus attacks.
How dependent someone is from day to day on his or her computer
makes no difference. For those who rely heavily on their computers,
the need for protection is self-evident. Businesses especially must
consider both customers and employees who depend on their services
and continued operation for their own well-being.
Viruses: Who’s Behind Them
When discussing viruses or computer worms and
the damage they are capable of, a natural question that arises is,
“Who is doing this, and why?” In answer, some have speculated that
the anti-virus and security companies are behind at least part of
the problem, trying to ensure an active market for their product.
