Chapter 12 - Virus Attacks
Viruses and Personal Safety
For better or worse, companies that make
extensive use of the Internet become dependent upon it. A problem
with the Internet means a problem at the company. Any number of
business functions can be affected; including planning, shipping and
customer communications. Problems with any major area of operation
are likely to negatively impact company performance, and a
difficulty that continues for any length of time, can affect a
businesses reputation.
While most people understand that attacks
against their computers pose a real threat and that it is important
to take precautionary steps, some do not. Not everyone is dependent
on his or her computer for everything. These people may not run a
business or even make extensive use of their computers for
entertainment. People in this category sometimes believe that the
worst that can happen is for them to be unable to access email for a
couple days.
Senior Security Analyst, Chris Kraft of Sophos
Inc. advises that the danger is more serious than that. An
unprotected computer is an easy mark, and a successful virus attack
could cause enough damage to require re-installation of the entire
operating system.
If the user has not maintained thorough
backups, everything would be lost. Email addresses, word processing
documents, budget and financial data would be gone forever. Even if
a methodical regimen for backup procedures had been followed,
performing a low-level format from scratch can be difficult. For
inexperienced users, it may be impossible to do this, and outside
help will have to be called in. For those who know how to perform
the format, it is a monotonous and time-consuming task, made all the
more unpleasant because it was so unnecessary.
