Chapter 12 - Virus Attacks

Viruses and Personal Safety

The costs and disruptions caused by virus and worm attacks are incurred primarily in the following areas:

  • The loss of business during periods of network failures.

  • The loss of consumer confidence in businesses hit by viruses.

  • Detection and removal of damaging viruses and worms.

  • Restoration of lost or corrupted data.

Large companies, says Howard Smith, incur significant costs when there is a major outbreak of a virus.  It takes time and money to go through large networks, finding and destroying viruses; not to mention the costs of recovering lost data and returning the system to its pre-infected state.  While the up-front costs in dollars and cents may be higher for large companies, mid-sized and small businesses typically expend more funds as a percentage of total available revenue on the problem.  Thus mid-sized and small businesses are less able to absorb these types of attacks.

Additionally, small and mid-sized businesses’ reputations are more easily damaged by problems resulting from computer attacks.  Very large, nationally known companies are not likely to actually lose customers due to a virus attack.  They will lose orders during the time the network is inoperative, but people will continue to do business with them as soon as they are able.

A small, lesser-known company experiencing similar problems for similar reasons may, in fact, lose customers altogether.  Consumers try new places, looking for good deals online.  If a transaction does not go smoothly, an order is lost or cannot be placed due to technical problems; the customer may likely blame the company itself and conclude they are dealing with a shoddy operation.  Possibly, they will look elsewhere for a good deal or go back to the nationally recognized company.
