Chapter 12 - Virus Attacks
When the Trojan Horse Rolls Through the Gate
A Trojan horse program works in the same way.
It appears to be something harmless or fun. It may look like a game
or a new screensaver, but these appearances are only a veneer, a
thin coating for a destructive program.
The programs that Trojan horses use to disguise
themselves may work only marginally or not at all. A game, for
example, might not work or might work only for a couple of levels.
But even if a program appears to be completely inoperative on the
surface, rest assured that it is possible that it is working just as
intended, and the damage is being done.
Viruses and Personal Safety
Howard Schmidt is an expert. His long list of
qualifications includes serving as a Computer Crimes Detective in
the Chandler AZ, Police Dept., Chief Security Officer for Microsoft
and Cyber Security Advisor to the White House. In 2001, Mr. Schmidt
testified before the Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer
Protection, and delivered a report entitled “Cyber Security &
Consumer Data: What’s at Risk for the Consumer”. During that
testimony Mr. Schmidt estimated that a single, particularly virulent
virus, known as the ILOVEYOU virus, launched in 2000 had cost an
estimated $8 billion to eradicate.

The potential for more and even costlier
attacks in the future is great. As society becomes increasingly
dependent on technology to function from day to day, the risk factor
associated with interference in that technology escalates.
