Chapter 12 - Virus Attacks
When Worms Attack
A worm is a program similar to a virus. Both
are able to replicate themselves and move between machines; and both
are potentially harmful.
Unlike a virus, a worm does not attach itself
to a file. It is a free-floating entity in itself. This makes the
worm much better at spreading itself quickly since it does not need
to wait for infected files to be sent. Worms can use the networking
capabilities and file sharing routines of any program to get itself
from one place to another. Of course, the worm is able to use email
as well, and it does not require the user to send it manually. It
is able to send itself. This makes a worm extremely mobile and able
to spread with unbelievable speed. A worm can quickly become a
global threat.
“Worm Uses Webcams to Spy on Users”, by Sharon
Gaudin
“A new variant of the Rbot worm has the ability
to take over users' webcams and use them to spy on people in their
offices and homes.”

When the Trojan Horse Rolls Through the Gate
Most people are familiar with the concept of
the Trojan horse. In Greek legend, the Greeks were able to prevail
over their ancient rival, Troy, by presenting a peace offering to
the city in the form a huge wooden horse. The offering was received
by the inhabitants of Troy and brought inside the city walls.
Inside the horse, however, were Greek soldiers who were now inside
the city and able to destroy from within and win the Trojan War.
