supplies their phone number to a marketer, it can effectively remove
them from the “Do Not Call List” and open them up to still more
advertising.
Protection from Web Spies
Fortunately, there are tools available that can
be used in the fight against Spyware and Adware.
A product called Spy Sweeper has been developed
by Webroot Software Inc. Spy Sweeper, as the name implies, will go
through a system looking for Spyware and Adware. Spy Sweeper is
available as a free trial on Webroot’s website at www.webroot.com/products/spysweeper.
Another company producing these sorts of
products is Lavasoft Inc. Lavasoft is the maker of Ad-Aware, which
is capable of detecting and eliminating Adware and Spyware.
Different versions of the Ad-Aware program are available to meet the
needs of different users. Basic versions of the software are
available for free, while a more full featured product can be
purchased.
Spyware and Adware detection programs all have
the same goal, but they work in different ways. Some are easier to
use than others and costs will vary. It is important for each user
to know their specific needs and evaluate program options carefully
to get the product that is right for them.
It is highly recommended that a third party
verification of the effectiveness of any detection program be
obtained before installing even a free trail version. This is
because some programs presenting themselves as free trial
anti-Spyware software are themselves in fact, Spyware. For a list
