Chapter 11 - Internet Spies
Discovering the
Secrets of Adware
Businesses advertise because it works.
Billions of dollars are spent in the U.S. every year by companies
trying to get their product in front of the American people. It
didn’t take long for businesses and advertisers to realize that the
Internet is one of the most effective ways to get a message out.
With this realization, came the birth of Adware. Adware is software
that is designed to display or deliver advertising messages. The
name itself is a commingling of the words advertising and software.
As with Spyware , Adware can be good or bad
depending on the user.
The Upside of Adware
While everyone loves to hate advertisements,
the ads do, of course, have a legitimate function. Most people
have, at one time or another, had the experience of encountering an
advertisement about a product or service that turned out to be just
the thing they needed.
Ads can also alert people to problems they did
not even know they had. One ad aired in a local market instructs
potential patrons to inspect their doors for fit and theirs walls
for cracks as a sign of problems with shifting foundations. A
person may do just that, discover they have a problem and get the
problem fixed, all because of an advertisement.
And, of course, ads can also direct people to
great bargains when they come along, making sure they do not miss
out on the big deals.
