Chapter 11 - Internet Spies
Removing Spyware
After the spyware scan, the product will
display a list of all of the adware and spyware cookies and give the
option of keeping them in a quarantine area or deleting them.
Spyware and the Law
As noted in Chapter 5, All about Cybercrime,
many laws are ineffective in a global arena. The good news is that
this is not stopping the U.S. Congress from making the introduction
of spyware a criminal offense.
The Internet Spyware Prevention Act, dubbed
“I-SPY”, introduces criminal penalties ranging from substantial
fines up to five years in prison for parties who cause spyware to be
downloaded or copied onto a computer without authorization. This
law applies to spyware that is introduced with the intent to either
to compromise the computer's security or to use the information
gained to defraud or injure a person. As of 2004, this Bill is
awaiting approval from the U.S. Senate.
Privacy Breeches on the PC
Particularly tech savvy cyber criminals with a
knack for hacking may prefer a different method for gaining access
to information. Rather than placing a spy program on a machine and
letting it do all the work, they will attempt to access information
directly, while a computer is online. The challenge of
accomplishing this may not be as daunting as it first appears.
Personal and business computers can be
outfitted and configured in such a way that makes them very
difficult to hack into. The problem is that computers are often
preconfigured and sold with their security settings at an absolute
minimum. These security configurations provide an inadequate
measure of protection, at best. At worst, it makes the computer a
sitting duck for anyone with malicious intent who happens along.
