Web Stalkers
Chapter 11 - Internet Spies
The Spyware in the Middle
Some programs that might not seem like Spyware
are in fact just that. For instance, Comet Cursor is a harmless
little utility that is supposed to make web browsing more fun. With
Comet Cursor installed, the user’s cursor changes from an arrow into
a cartoon character or some other unusual graphic.
Though it sounds innocent enough, there are a
few problems with this program. The program was installed on users’
systems without their consent or participation. They were not asked
if they wanted it, nor did policy mandate that they approve of its
use. It was just set up for them by web designers who thought it
would be amusing.
The second and more serious problem is the
information the program needs in order to run. In truth, the
program tracks IP addresses, websites visited by the browser, system
settings and so on. This program was not malicious, and it was
intended only to give the Internet surfer a little smile when their
mouse pointer unexpectedly transformed into Mighty Mouse.
While the writers of the program may have been
above board, the hard fact remains that a program the user did not
ask for is running on their system and tracking what they do. This
presents a problem. Unauthorized access to any computer and the use
of the information gathered from that computer is a genuine risk.
