Cyber Theft
Freeware
The open-source movement represents a major
implementation of free software. The Free Software Foundation and
their General Public License, GPL, established an early presence in
what became known as the “open source movement”.
One of the features of free software is what
the leading figure in the open source movement, Eric S. Raymond
refers to as the benefit of having many people looking into a
problem. He says, “Every problem will be transparent to somebody.”
Who hasn’t faced a difficult problem only to have a friend or
associate suggest a viable solution that they had not thought of?
This is of value to some companies because
trouble with a program can take months or years to fix. Frequently,
the only solution is to buy or license a newer version of the
program. Free software often has a solution within days and
sometimes even hours after the problem is discovered.
E-Books
Electronic books, or e-books, are becoming more
common. Sometimes e-books are simply an electronic copy of a
printed book, and the only benefit is that they can be carried on a
CD ROM. Other times, they are fully searchable, which provides a
huge benefit over hard copy books where the index is simply a
compilation of words the publisher thought were important enough to
list.
While there are benefits to e-books, there are
also downsides. Making photocopies of even small, one-hundred page
books, would be time-consuming enough that it would not be done very
often. However, Google is doing just that in an attempt to create
a vast online, totally searchable, library.
