Chapter 6 -
Cyber Theft
Software Licensing and the Internet
One organization that works against software
theft is the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA).
SIIA is the principal trade association for the software and digital
content industry. They work to promote, protect, and inform the
software and digital content industry.
The SIIA web page on piracy includes
information on how to report corporate or Internet piracy. This
includes the possibility of being eligible for a reward of up to
$50,000 USD. For more information on reporting violations, visit
their web page at www.spa.org/piracy.
The costs of software programs run the gamut
from moderate to extremely expensive. If high cost is a deterrent,
users can consider alternative programs as some vendors have
different versions of the same products to meet the needs of a wide
variety of customers.
For example, a family holiday letter requires a
word processor with different features than a weekly newsletter with
multiple authors, editors, and reviewers. Writing a corporate
memorandum requires different features than writing a book. Users
should consider how the program in question will be used, and then
shop for different products that will meet their exact needs.
Computer games are particularly susceptible to
theft because the top games are often hyped-up through expansive
advertising campaigns. Fans on Internet game-discussion lists
supplement this advertising. Players in these forums often promote
the game as they tout their skills and discuss strategy.
