Music Downloads
To combat the illegal distribution of music,
digital protection is being developed, which will protect copyright
holders. Some methods will limit the number of copies that can be
made. This has drawn some criticism from consumer rights advocates
who fear that customers will not be able to make copies of music for
personal use.
Another approach is to imbed an identification
code into the digital music itself. This will allow law enforcement
the ability to identify the source of the copy. Of course, the
problem with any solution is convincing all the parties involved to
agree to a standard. For example, there are problems with some
solutions that will not let music be saved to certain mp3 digital
music players from some software programs.
The days of freely downloading any song without
fear of reprisal are over, and the days of making copies of CDs may
soon be over or, at the very least, closely restricted.
Software Licensing and the Internet
Most of today’s software programs are covered
by software licenses. These licenses protect software development
companies from unauthorized usage of its software. This protection
from unauthorized usage is important because most often the
financial investment in a program is huge. If these licenses are
not enforced, people will not purchase the programs and the software
companies will not be able to stay in business.
To help enforce these licenses, many software
companies use copy protection devices to slow or stop illegal copies
from working. This slows down the process of installing legal as
well as illegal software. It is also problematic when a computer is
replaced, as the owner will sometimes need to contact the vendor to
obtain a new license key for installing existing legal software on
the new computer. Installing on a second computer is usually not
legal unless it is a replacement for the first. Each software
company has their own rules, so users should be sure to read the
software license and call the vendor if they have any questions.
