Chapter 6 -
Cyber Theft
Music Downloads
Advances in technology, however, changed the
record companies’ attitudes towards downloading free music. Higher
quality and readily available equipment for playing and copying
music combined with master digital CDs now results in pristine
copies. Computers and technology can make a digital copy of music
into a format any computer can read. This facilitated the spread of
illegal music. Online services were created that allowed people to
share their digital music collection with anyone in the world who
wanted it. Whereas, illegal copies used to be limited to a small
circle of friends, these online services made it possible for one
legal album or CD to be shared illegally with every person in the
world who has Internet access.
These changes forced copyright owners to sit up
and take notice. The Recording Industry Association of America
(RIAA) is the trade group that represents the U.S. recording
industry. Its mission is to foster a business and legal climate
conducive to their members’ creative and financial vitality.
“In order for legitimate services to continue
their growth, we cannot ignore those who take and distribute music
illegally. There must be consequences to breaking the law, or
illegal downloading will cripple the music community’s ability to
support itself now or invest in the future.”
RIAA President Cary Sherman
In recent years, the RIAA has brought legal
action against thousands of individuals and companies that have
participated in illegal music exchanges. They are taking aggressive
action to slow the spread of illegal music sharing.
