Chapter 6 -
Cyber Theft
Music and the Web
In the era of vinyl records and cassette tapes,
people routinely made copies of records onto cassette tapes for a
variety of reasons. Some wanted to protect the more sensitive vinyl
from being damaged. Others wanted to be able to listen to their
music in the car. Some people wanted to avoid buying their own
music and chose to disregard copyright law by making copies of
artists’ records.
Music Downloads
A recent trend has been to offer free music
downloads in conjunction with another purchase. These free
downloads require a specific program. The programs are free, but
they require the user to create an account.
This disregard for the law, while not endorsed
by the record companies and other copyright owners, was generally
considered to have a minor monetary impact on record sales. This
was for a couple of reasons.
-
One reason was the limited quality of
the copied music. Stereo equipment capable of reproducing music at
a high quality was very expensive and not very common. This meant
that the quality of most copies was inferior to what could be
obtained by purchasing legal music.
-
Another reason for the relatively
minor impact was the scale of these copies. Most illegal copies
produced amounted to a person’s circle of friends. The
justification many people expressed when asked about the legality of
making copies of music for a friend was usually something like
this;
”So what if I make a few copies? I’m not
charging any money. The record companies have bigger fish to fry
than me.”
