Chapter 5 -
All About Cybercrime
Conclusion
There are many individual and corporate
netizens helping to make the Internet a safer place to navigate.
Specialized law enforcement units and companies that develop
security and anti-virus software, as well as consultants and
security experts all make the Internet a less threatening
environment. Additionally, there are hundreds of responsible
corporations like banks, retailers and others who contribute by
maintaining a high level of security awareness in their Internet
dealings.
And then there is the individual netizen. When
a user maintains a clean, protected system with application and
operating system patches installed; anti-virus software and Internet
security programs up-to-date and running, they make their computer a
hard target to hit. On the Internet, ensuring the personal security
of each individual user is the best way to promote the security of
all users.
In spite of all these precautionary efforts,
cyber crime happens. When it does, Internet users must report it in
a timely manner and cooperating fully with law enforcement in their
efforts to investigate and prosecute the perpetrators.
Many of the larger issues impacting the world
of cyber-crime today have been presented in this chapter. Some of
the key topics covered were:
-
Criminal terms and definitions.
-
Civil matters of defamation and libel.
-
Reporting cyber crime to law enforcement.
-
Cyber crimes involving identity theft.
-
Cyber crimes involving conspiracies.
-
Jurisdictional concerns and international
Internet law.
The next chapter the growing problem of cyber
theft will be addressed and it will illustrate how crooks use the
web to steal from honest consumers.
