Chapter 5 -
All About Cybercrime
Reporting Web Crimes to Law Enforcement
While the victim will certainly benefit from
reporting a crime, it may be an encouragement to remember that
others will benefit as well. Hundreds of people who might otherwise
have suffered a similar attack may never become a target. Timely
and accurate reporting of crimes gives law enforcement the
information they need to stop the perpetrators more quickly, and
that means less victims.
As soon a person realizes they have been
successfully targeted and are now a victim of cyber crime, they need
to contact local law enforcement and ask for the Computer Crimes
Unit. As may be the case, if no such crime unit exists, one should
at least attempt to locate a detective who is cyber-savvy and has
experience along these lines. If nothing else, the local
authorities may be able to refer the victim to another agency more
suited to handle computer crimes.
Michael Rayball, commander of the Maricopa
County Sheriff’s Office Computer Crimes Division states that for
some local police departments, the resources to support a dedicated
computer crimes unit are just not available.
The next section provides a quick look at the
right of victims of cybercrimes.
Victims’ Rights and
Cybercrimes
Cyber crimes can be dangerous, leaving victims
with a sense of helplessness. Law enforcement needs to be involved
if the perpetrator is to be caught and punished, but to which agent
of the law ought a victim to go? The answer is: it depends.
