Chapter 5 -
All About Cybercrime
Preventing Cyber attacks
Government agencies need to be especially
vigilant in guarding against cyber attacks. They are likely to be
probed by more virulent bugs, and a successful breach of security is
likely to have more dire consequences.
Corporations and businesses own and operate
some of the largest computer network systems known. These users
must maintain a high degree of awareness and be ready for the
worst. A company that does not mind its own security is not only
putting itself at risk, but offers itself unintentionally as a
platform from which others may be attacked.
In February 2003, the Department of Homeland
Security
released The National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace report,
which
presented recommendations for protecting the United States against
cyber attacks. The report can be accessed on line at www.dhs.gov/interweb/assetlibrary/National_Cyberspace_Strategy.pdf.
Knowing about illegal material or activity on
the Internet is one thing, getting the relevant information to the
proper authorities in a timely manner is quite another.
Reporting Web Crimes to Law Enforcement
There
may be a tendency on the part of some people to feel a sense of
shame when they realize they have become a victim of cyber crime.
Rather than give in to this temptation, try to learn from the
experience. Discover the areas of vulnerability that made the crime
possible and make the adjustments necessary to keep the incident
from being repeated. The first step in the process is often the
reporting of the crime.
