Web Stalkers
Chapter 5 -
All About Cybercrime

Cyber Attacks and Terrorism

“New York City and much of the Northeast were paralyzed by a sudden blackout yesterday that stopped 50 million people in their tracks.  From New Jersey all the way to Toronto, trains stopped, computers crashed, planes were grounded, air conditioners cut off and thousands of homes and businesses were plunged into darkness by the largest power outage in the nation's history”.

Excerpted from, www.nydailynews.com story about the August 14th 2003 power failure.

A major failure of the power grid like the one experienced in the northeastern United States and parts of Canada in 2003, provides a stark reminder of how completely dependent society is on the public utility systems.  Transportation systems grind to a halt, businesses of every kind shut down, security systems fail and as a result, public officials have their hands full.

Initial suspicions that this black-out may have been terrorist related turned out to be unsubstantiated.  The fear remains, however, that a major terrorist assault with severe real world consequences could be launched against the computer systems that control the infrastructures on which everyone depends.

Preventing Cyber attacks

There are many sectors of the computing society and all bear a responsibility to themselves and others to be on the alert for security risks.  While it is unquestionably in the interest of individual computer users to protect their personal systems against these sorts of attacks, there is a larger benefit to doing so.  Viruses spread through the Internet by making use of inadequately protected equipment.  A network of well-protected machines, results in a well-protected network.
