Chapter 5 -
All About Cybercrime
Sexual Addiction and the Internet
For many people pornography is a problem. Like
alcohol, gambling or drugs, it can take control of a person’s life
and drag them kicking and screaming or voluntarily into the gutter.
The addictive and progressive (or should that be regressive) nature
of pornography is well documented.
There are a number of things netizens can do to
limit their exposure to potentially harmful material. One very
effective measure that can be taken is the use of Internet filtering
devices.
For those who already suffer from an addiction,
other useful resources that have helped people who wrestle with
pornography addiction are support groups and programs. Sexaholics
Anonymous (www.sa.org)
is one such organization that leads struggling people through a
12-step recovery process based on the widely successful 12-step
program developed by Alcoholics Anonymous. Numerous resources are
available at their website, including a self-assessment test
designed to help those who suspect they have a problem determine if
they actually do.
Cyber Attacks and
Terrorism
Some experts believe that the use of the term
cyber-terrorism is inappropriate. They argue that terrorism is a
class of crime so grievous that computer related offenses do not
deserve the title; therefore, they argue the term cyber-terrorism is
a misnomer. While cyber-attacks are typically associated with
computer viruses and other malicious scripts, they can often have
real world consequences.
