Obscenity on the Web

The content must contain patently offensive
depictions or descriptions of specific sexual conduct as judged by
the contemporary standards in the affected community.

artistic, political or scientific value.

Material that meets these conditions is
illegal, whether obtained at an adult bookstore or on the Internet.
Child Pornography
Regardless of what a person thinks about
pornography, the fact remains that specific laws make particular
types of pornography illegal. It is a criminal offense in many
places in the world, including Great Britain, Australia and the
United States to have any dealings of any kind with child
pornography. It is illegal to produce, sell, buy or view child
pornography. While legislators have extended a measure of
protection to other types of pornography as a form of free speech,
the law remains unequivocal in its view of child pornography; it is
illegal.
Some have protested that the definition of
child pornography is too restrictive. For the purposes of the law,
anyone under the age of 18 is considered a child. Advocates for the
pornography industry have argued for lowering the age of adulthood,
ostensibly to keep in step with the standards in other parts of the
world. One wonders if these newly defined adults would be entrusted
with other responsibilities associated with their new status.
Experts on sex crimes against children disagree and paint a dark
picture of this sordid underworld.
The fact remains that laws vary from country to
country, and what is legal in one location is against the law in
another. The questions of jurisdictions, whose laws apply where,
and what laws take precedence when, are still being argued and
resolved day by day. There is, as yet, no end in sight to the
problems associated with the world-wide regulation of the World Wide
Web.
