Theft
According to Michael G. Kessler & Associates, the
top three reasons why employees steal from their employer are:
·
greed (49%)
·
getting even (43%)
·
need (8%)
Theft
in the workplace may occur in
various forms. Theft of physical property may include personal items
of other employees or the physical assets of the company. Any category
of theft should be equally recognized as a criminal act. Tracking down
the perpetrator of physical theft is a difficult task without a
witness, but surveillance
cameras may provide an excellent
means of providing evidence.
A major problem for today’s technology-based
businesses and, specifically, the IT organization is information theft
and identity theft. Information is the core of every business and must
be protected under tight security. Internet hackers,
viruses, worms, and other pariah can steal and destroy valuable
company information.
Information theft by
dishonest employees unfortunately occurs all too frequently,
especially by IT employees who have the easiest access to company
information. Technology also provides the means by which employers may
track and identify breaches of information security from
internal and external threats. All companies must be vigilant in
protecting their information assets not only for proprietary reasons,
but also regulatory reasons such as privacy of information.
Theft of Records Story
An employee at an insurance company apparently had
a disagreement with his manager. The disgruntled employee was intent
on vindicating the perceived wrong inflicted upon him. It boiled down
to the employee being unhappy with his compensation rate. Since he
worked in the tax department, he had computer access to the personnel
files of all employees. The results were disastrous. He used the
internet to sell the personal records of the company’s employees. The
privacy of their personal identification information was violated.
To follow up, the employee also attempted to
implicate his manager in the identity theft that he perpetrated by
sending emails to other employees. He finally confessed to the crime
and was fired immediately. Of course, he caused tremendous damage
against thousands of employees.
