Technical
Skills
Does the employee have the ability to put
knowledge into practical use in fulfilling the responsibilities of the
job?
The fact that an IT employee needs to have the
prerequisite technical knowledge and the
ability to put this knowledge into practice goes without saying. This
measurement is fairly easy to gauge. They can perform the job or they
can’t perform the job. A good manager will assist employees in gaining
the proper skills for the job, but there needs to be an effort made by
the employees, as mentioned previously. Gaining technical skills is an
ongoing process and requires the investment of time. When errors and
mistakes are continually made, the red flags go up that maybe the
individual’s technical skills are not sufficient for the job.
Perhaps the employee has expended appropriate time
to gain the necessary knowledge for the job, but they still lack the
skill levels required to become a productive contributor. Over time,
it becomes apparent that training dollars are being squandered on a
person that cannot produce adequate returns. A decision will have to
be made on the employment status of this employee.
