Responsiveness
Is work completed within defined target dates or
under adverse circumstances, within a reasonable amount of time? Does
the employee exhibit a sense of urgency about his or her work? Is the
employee flexible enough to meet the reasonable demands of the job
function?
Many of the employees who work in the IT field are
good about completing their work tasks by the requested target dates.
Although there are those that fall into another category, that of not
being responsive either to planned assignments or problem resolution.
Inability to Multitask Story
Mike was a good DBA who was very knowledgeable
about Oracle databases. He enjoyed digging deep into technical issues
by perusing Oracle Metalink, reading manuals and books, and utilizing
other information sources. In that respect, he was very helpful to the
team.
One of Mike’s downfalls was his inability to
multitask, and also the fact that he just spent too much time
completing individual tasks. Another Oracle DBA in the organization
with many years of hands-on experience knew how long much of Mike’s
work should have taken. Occasionally, the DBA would ask Mike to work
on a special request, or an unexpected system problem would crop up
and Mike would drop all his other assignments to work on the new task.
Everything else literally came to a standstill. Of course, he would
miss many target dates due to this work methodology. The end result
was irate IT customers.
