Quality
of Results
Computer professionals who are not careful,
complete, and accurate about their work can cause highly detrimental
effects on the operations of the systems infrastructure. Technicians
who are careless and sloppy in their work can bring whole business
functions to a halt with simple mistakes and omissions. The computer
professional must be cautious and meticulous as they provide their
support. All system requirements must be accurately and completely
delivered to ensure the integrity, effectiveness, and efficiency of
business operations.
Any negative deviation from work expectations must
be discussed between the manager and the subordinate. Ongoing
occurrences of poor work quality must be addressed. Starting with a
soft approach to remedy such situations is usually the best course of
action. The intention in addressing quality concerns is not to trample
the self-esteem of the individual, but to find the cause and eliminate
its reoccurrence.
A key indicator of a performance problem is
whether the poor quality of work is a
consistent behavior or just an occasional mistake. All employees
falter now and then which may have unfortunate consequences, but the
focus in those cases should be on resolving the issue and moving on.
However, consistently poor quality of work
results that are not a misperception or caused by some other factor
out of the control of the employee is unacceptable.
IT managers can monitor the quality of work
for their departments by tracking and reporting job metrics such
as the number of incidents or outages, system uptime, number of
errors, mean-time-to-repair, etc.
