Problem
Solving
Does the employee regularly analyze and resolve
complex problems, including those across multiple IT disciplines? Can
problems be fixed independently in many cases? Can system anomalies be
diagnosed logically with accurate conclusions and effective results?
Mr. Lack of Motivation Story
There was an employee who had worked in IT for
many years. He had more than adequate training and had been afforded
numerous work assignments to advance his skills. Yet, he did nothing
with it. He did some basic work tasks, but it was limited to what was
fully explained to him, many times in written form, and only when
directly instructed to do it.
When he was on-call, he has great difficulty
knowing where to start analyzing a problem, even though other
employees had documented the exact troubleshooting process to follow.
Part of his issue was capability, but he also lacked motivation. He
had difficulty learning and analyzing, and he was also basically too
lazy to improve himself or make an effort to resolve system problems.
Mentors had been assigned to him, many “learning”
opportunities had been presented, the opportunity for additional
formal training had been afforded, and he had been directly told to
start making more effort, all to no avail.
