Leadership
Is leadership exhibited in different areas such as
technical expertise, teamwork
, policies, directives, attitude,
work ethic, reliability
, knowledge, standards definition
and adherence, staff development, documentation,
decision-making, administrative responsibilities, and values?
Leadership
is a very broad category comprised
of many different components. A true leader must be strong in all of
the performance categories described in this chapter. How else can
they set the example for others if they do not practice what they
preach as the standard for excellence? IT employees need to see by
example what is expected of them. They will admire the person who
stands out as the best, fights for their rights and in their best
interest, is fair to all co-workers, is a decent individual, has
integrity, is pleasant to work with, pulls their fair share of the
workload, is reliable, works for the betterment of the team, and
continually strives for self-improvement. Leadership happens on many
levels and is not solely a management category. IT organizations need
leaders in technology, process improvement, project management,
standards, security, communications, teamwork, positive
attitude, and so forth.
Answering the questions in each of these
categories will provide the necessary information for an effective
employee performance review and rating. See Figure 2.1 for a Sample
Performance Appraisal Form that may be used in the appraisal process.
