Decision-Making
Is the IT professional decisive in carrying out
his or her responsibilities? Are decisions made within reasonable time
constraints to effectively and efficiently produce work results? Are
complex decisions made that involve various technologies and support
groups? Are good decisions made on a consistent basis?
Senior IT employees are expected to exhibit
consistent behavior that helps the organization meet its objectives
and goals. This consistency also applies to making good decisions. The
IT environment for most companies is very complex and requires
employees that can assess the situation and make effective decisions.
Many of these decisions involve some aspect of multiple support groups
such as database administration, UNIX and NT administration, and
network administration. Along with the ability to formulate these
complex decisions, the employees must be capable of acting on the
decision at the proper time. A decision that is not acted upon will
cause missed opportunities, and one that is acted upon too late is
less effective or even detrimental.
A computer professional who makes bad decisions
will harm the IT department and its customers in many ways, ranging
from bad data quality to lost business revenue. Bad decision-making on
a regular basis is not acceptable and the wayward employee should
either improve the situation if possible or be worked into another job
or out of the company.
