The Many Faces of Oracle Databases
Oracle databases are extremely dynamic
and constantly changing. The database may be constrained by
memory in one instant and I/O the next. Nobody can deny that
tuning a constantly changing environment is a challenge.
This chapter will cover the concept of
time-series tuning where metrics are tracked over time, and
holistic adjustments are used to keep Oracle running at peak
performance. This chapter will cover following topics, all from
a proactive, time-series perspective:
Major sections of this book have been
devoted to silver bullets for these issues; however, a quick
high-level look at the main issues in this chapter is included.
Oracle tuning is a complex endeavor.
Even the automated tuning tools within
Oracle are not always sufficient to tune large, complex Oracle
databases and a proactive tuning approach must be combined with
proven Oracle silver bullets.
There are many approaches to tuning, and
while every method seeks to remedy a bottleneck, each approach
is very different.
The next step is to
gather information on the proactive tuning approach and how
time-series tuning is a great silver bullet for a DBA’s arsenal
of tools. |
