The main thrust of our book has been on the proactive tuning approach and leveraging upon the historical performance data within the Oracle 10g Automatic Workload Repository to detect and repair repeating patterns of database stress. The Oracle 10g historical performance metrics form the foundation for a true predictive model where we can analyze historical stress on all Oracle components, especially the SGA regions (shared pool, data buffer caches), disk access and network utilization.
By applying the proactive techniques described in this book and executing the pre-written scripts in the code depot you should be able to understand the unique characteristics of your database and refine the signatures for all of your important metrics. This knowledge of the shifting bottlenecks within your database will allow you to locate and address the root cause of even the most difficult performance issue. Most important of all, this text lays the foundation for holistic performance tuning whereby you can identify repeating changes in resources and schedule corrective actions before they impact the overall response time.
Remember, those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it! Any book is this scope will have opportunities for improvement and we welcome your feedback. All errata and enhancements and published on the Rampant TechPress book detail page for this book, and we continuously strive to address new tuning techniques and methods. If you have errata, comments or suggestion, please send an e-mail to info@rampant.cc.
